Twenty-two divided by seven is 3.142857, repeating. It is a little too big, off by about one part in 2,500.

Over two thousand years ago, Archimedes trapped π between two shapes with ninety-six sides each, one just inside a circle and one just outside. 22/7 was the outside edge of the trap, and it is the one people kept.
